from what i know hardening isnt just a coating, its melted with the lead and i think its antimony it looks like alu silvery not dark it will appear dusty after some use like un hardened lead sulfur eats into the lead and it does powder off on its own but shouldnt break up like youve seen your jar maybe undercharged with media allowing the lead to fall from a good enough height to disrtort it ...

I've made some pretty good black powder using a coffee grinder and porter porter and pestle, but I was looking into getting a ball was going to get one of the cheap 70 6lb rock tumbler and modify it per skylighter's directions, but I would still need to get media to fill it half full, 200 1/2" balls.

My very first ball mill such as it was used a few pounds of stainless steel nuts and bolts for the medium charge. Ball bearings are very good for milling. Muzzle loading balls are, also. Fishing weights work (egg weights are about the best). Marbles work. Some people (scaring me as they do it) use glass marbles to mill black powder. LLoyd

I thought I would try it out as a ball mill, so I cast up a large batch of .575" (58 cal) hard round lead balls. The trouble is that 30 pounds of lead balls only fills it to about 1/3 full. I know that it is desirable to have the mill 1/2 full of media. Will I get acceptable efficiency with only 1/3 of the mill full of media?

To grind a single chemical (vs. a mix like black powder) using a ball mill, fill your mill jar half full of hardened lead or brass grinding media, and 25% full of potassium nitrate. Turn the mill on and come back in an hour. Your nitrate should be light and fluffy. If not, continue grinding it 'til it's fine powder with no chunks or grains.
